It's been a while

You know it has been a while since I updated when I couldn't remember the password to get into my blog. lol. I finally figured it out, though and here I am.
It has been an amazing couple of months. I am writing a column for the online magazine http://www.simplystylishlife.com/ I am under the home section. Please check it out. I got to do work for the TV series "The Vampire Diaries" too. We made a velvet patchwork quilt for a flashback scene from the 1400's. When I say we made it, we actually made all the pieces and hand sewed all the quilting. It was crazy. We only had 3 days to get it done. When we delivered, the set designer, Karen Bruck, gave us a tour of the sets. It was really neat to see behind the scenes.
I also gave a trunk show to the ladies of the Bradshaw Farms Womens Club. It went so well. They asked so many questions and I got a lot of feedback from them. I was really feeling 'under the weather' but their great response gave me so much encouragement. I have my next trunk show next Saturday at an interior design shop in Snellville. I have a few more ideas and samples to make up. I want you to be able to come to everyone of my shows and see something different. I have my third show schedule at the Towne Lake Hills Golf Club for January. I measured the club last week for draperies and am really excited to be doing this for them.
We were also able to do some work with Pat Shankle Interiors in the Atlanta Home Show at the Cobb Galleria. It was a really great show and we were so glad to help them. Pictures are posted on this post.
I am so thankful for all the doors that God has been opening up. I am so humbled.
We are getting booked for the holidays so if you need any draperies made, call now.

Looking Ahead!!

It has been an exciting couple of days here. Good and bad. We have had several meetings with interior designers that we have met at various functions. They have all been so nice and we have really enjoyed spending time with them.

We are also excited about some opportunities that could be opening up for us to do work in the film industry. It would be so incredible to be watching a movie and see window treatments that we made. LOL. How exciting.

The basement bathroom that we are working on is almost complete. We can't wait to post pictures soon of the finished project. It has a paris theme but not too much that it goes over the top. It is done in soothing greys and blacks. It is really coming along.

We have a big project to finish this week and some smaller ones to finish and deliver. We also are upholstering some custom sofas for a designer in the Atlanta Home Show that I hope get finished this week.

We are also turning in our article this week for the first addition of the "Simply Stylish Life" magazine. We will link to it online as soon as it is available. We are really excited about this new adventure.
The photos above are of the Cedar Grove Bed and Breakfast in Vicksburg MS. Lovely house, I just hate that they added wallpaper border (which I seriously doubt they had in 1841 when the house was built). I love period treatments, in period houses!!

Happy Labor Day!! (or what's left of it)

This has been a pretty busy weekend. The cool fall air always makes me want to purge all the clutter in my life and home and begin the "nesting" process for winter. We have loaded bags of trash and boxes and boxes for donation. Hopefully my "trash" can be someone else's treasure.
Speaking of donations, Cherry Lane Drapery is donating 10% of it's proceeds for all orders placed until 10/31/2010 to the Susan G Komen Atlanta foundation. We are really excited about this!! So, for everyone out there, get your draperies done for the holidays and donate to an amazing cause all at the same time. What could be better?
I hope all of you had a great Labor Day weekend and were able to spend quality time with your families. During some of my down time, I watched 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'. What an amazing gift to have such a large loving family. To know that no matter what, they have your back. I hope and pray that for each one of you.
We are coming into the cool, fall weekends full of garage sales, pumkin patches, apple picking, festivals, and of course, the southern favorite....FOOTBALL!!!! I think I have already lost my husband and sons. While they are sitting on the sofa, watching the game, take out your girlfriends or daughters and do a little window shopping. See the new trends and styles that are out there. Go to an open house or showhome and get some ideas. Make your home a place to "hunker" down this winter and enjoy your loved ones. The Atlanta Home Show is taking place this month on the 24th at the Cobb Galleria. Check it out!!! Meet some of the vendors and just relax and enjoy.

Coffee and Ideas

Today was a really great day!!! I had a coffee meeting with Karran Gloer of Simply Stylish Life. She is starting an online lifestyle magazine on October 1st. Cherry Lane Drapery will be writing a monthly design column. We tossed around so many ideas. It was a really great meeting and I am looking forward to this new opportunity. You can go to their homepage at http://www.simplystylishlife.com/ The magazine should be up and running on Oct. 1 so please check it out. Let's make this so successful that she can go to a print version as soon as possible.

My mind has been ablaze last night and this morning with opening new directions for the business. I made some email contacts and are excited about the possibilities.

There is a new business opening up in the morning in downtown Woodstock called Pineapple Park. They are a home interior store and design business. Competition, yes, but I really wish them success. I would love to see the downtown Woodstock area shops all rented out. It is really a great area.

I am looking forward to the Labor Day weekend. It's always nice to spend time at home with the family. I do hope we can get the downstairs bathroom finished so I can post pictures. I had some of my prints I bought in Paris framed and really excited about getting them up. Can't wait to share.

Another Milestone for Cherry Lane Drapery

Today we made another milestone for our business. We had our first article published in 'Around North Fulton' magazine. Check it out at http://www.aroundnorthfulton.com/ We are so excited. Thanks to all our family and friends who have supported us.

We have been busy on several really big projects the past several weeks. They are coming along really well.

Last Saturday night, we went to a party for the Georgia Production Partners. We met several designers and movie industry personnel in regards to being a supplier of draperies and upholstery for the television and movie industry. Very exciting stuff. We would really like for that to work out.

We also have an opportunity to be at the Atlanta Home Show. We will give more information about that as we get it. It is coming up September 24, 2010 for the weekend at the Cobb Galleria.

We also have found a retail space that we are interested in. It really is a big step and we are not quite sure if we are ready.

We just have a lot of things going on right now and are very grateful for all the opportunities.

Thank you all for following our blog.

Back to a Routine

Well, school is back in session, dance and karate lessons are back on and I'm slipping back into a routine with work.

We took a well needed trip to Vicksburg, Ms and New Orleans, La. In New Orleans, we were able to go see the Southern Living Magazine's Idea House in the Terra Bella subdivision in Convington, La. It was beautiful. The subdivision has the theme of living, working and shopping all in the same place. Parking is in the back of the house with each home having a front porch, sidewalks, city squares, grocery stores, schools, deli, post office. Eveything you need is in one place and within walking distance. The developer told us that they want you to park the car after work and not have to get back in to it again. WOW!!! I would love that. That is a dream come true.

We are also looking for a retail space for rent. Trying to decide if it's the right thing to do right now. We did find a place, in the area that we want so it wouldl just be working out the details with the owner. It is an older building that needs a lot of work.

We have several projects in the works right now that we are excited about. I also have an article that will be in the "Around North Fulton" magazine starting in September. I have so many great ideas but just trying to concentrate on one thing at a time.

On our trip to Vicksburg, we stayed at the Cedar Grove Mansion bed and breakfast. We really enjoyed our stay there. If you ever have the chance, you have to go. Make sure you have dinner at the resturant there. Above are pictures from the inn. You know I had to take pictures of the window treatments. Thank you Kami for loaning me the camera.

Anatomy of a Redesign Part 1

I spent the weekend chillin' out watching HGTV for some inspiration. At some point, the station changed from decorating and design to real estate shows and "do it for 100.00" shows. Some of these shows are pretty good but their budgets are not realistic in that, no one pays for labor. The show does it for free. So a 2000.00 budget, really is a 4000.00 budget because labor is usually the same price as the materials. The problem comes in when clients are under the impression that they can get all the bells and whistles done for the same small budget. It really doesn't work that way. It got me to thinking. I am going to start a series showing the design and remodel process for a master bedroom. It is a pretty middle of the road redo with some items being very budget conscience but some upgrades made as well that a lot of clients not needing or wanting. The budget for this client was $5000.00. We will try to stay as close to that as possible so some concessions will have to be made. I will take you through the process as it progresses step by step and explain what is being done as well as the cost incurred and the savings that were or could be made.
Unfortunately we don't have any before pictures but the room started as a rectangle bedroom with white carpet and a set of triple floor to ceiling windows as well as another single floor to ceiling window. This master bedroom is on the main floor of the house and the owners have small children who come and go. They decided to pull up the white carpet verses having it cleaned. They had already installed wood flooring on the whole main floor and decided to continue it into the bedroom for ease of cleaning. They also wanted a fireplace but having a gas fireplace installed would have run around $2500-$4000. They opted instead for an electric fireplace insert that has 4 flame controls as well as a heater that can be used in the winter. It also came with a remote control. The 40 inch unit cost around 700.00 with construction cost for the fireplace wall and adjoining bookcase as well as electrical for tv and cable running another 800.00.
Five thousand sounds like a lot, and it can be for sure but when you are looking at having things done custom and paying the labor and materials, it can really add up fast. If you are considering a design or remodel, you really need to sit down with a budget and be willing to forgo some items that you can live without in order to stay within budget.
More pictures of this remodel coming soon so check back with us. Until then, have a great week.

Back to Work

Getting ready for a busy week next week. We have a fairly big order due next Friday for a new client. We get the opportunity to do a few new things. I spent the day getting everything together.
Today was Eva's birthday as well. I have to give her a big "Happy Birthday" to my five year old. I started this business when I was pregnant with her. She has spent her whole life around fabrics and trims. I love that she can really appreciate it when she sees beautiful windows.
Monday we installed some ruched panels for a client. They are a soft, romantic heading that works great in bedrooms and dining rooms. They have a cloud-like feel and work really well when the fabrics are light weight, such as silk. We have made them several times and I love how they turn out.
The picture below is a closeup of the ruched panels.

Not your grandma's pinch pleats

There are so many different pleat styles these days, one doesn't have to settle for the traditional pinch pleat if they don't want to. Even though the traditional style is timeless, some customers are opting for a more clean, updated pleat. Enter the euro pleat. Instead of being tacked at the bottom of the pleat like the traditional pleat, these pleats are tacked at the top of the pleat. It adds a bit of sophistication to custom drapery panels. These pleats can be made long (4-5 inches) or short (2 inches). Either way, they allow the customer to get the panels they want with a modern twist.
Tonight I had dinner with one of my designer friends, Anne. We have such a good time when we are together. We have a lot of common interests besides work but it is always fun to sit and talk to someone creative. I hope you enjoyed my little informative spill. I always like to educate my clients on all of their options.

What a fabulous day!!!

I really took a day off today. My friend Lisa (not my assistant) and I got a sitter for the kids and went to Camilla's Day Spa http://www.camillasdayspa.com/ and had a 1 hour massage and a 1 hour facial. It was awesome. Lori (not me) the owner and her staff were so nice. I think I fell asleep during my facial. We were so relaxed. We went out to lunch and went shopping afterwards. Since we had a sitter, we took full advantage. I even had my phone turned off. Those of you who know me know what a major step that is. I did have a few crisis calls but took care of those when I got home.

Congratulations go out to Pam of PS Interiors and Anne of Rosehall Kitchens and Baths. They are two decorators that I work for. Both of them got signed contracts today for design work. I'm so happy for them, not because I will get work from it, I will, but because I think it's wonderful to be able to do what you love to do for a living. I'm glad they have that opportunity. I'm thankful all the time that I get to do what I love. I loved nursing when I was doing it but when it was time to change, it was time to change.

I do have to do a few things while I am off this week but they are not big projects so I should be able to knock them out.

Just Now Sitting Down

It has been a crazy week. The last few weeks of school are just so hectic around here. Between class parties, field trips, award ceremonies, etc. It is all I can do just to get those things done. I really enjoyed every minute of it though. We even had a surprise trip to the ER because one the girls got hit in the head with a baseball bat. There is never a dull moment around here.

I had a really big install this morning. A master bedroom and bathroom. My husband went out of town, so did Lisa, my assistant. My oldest daughter had the other three kids but I had to take Sarah to the install. She really had a good time. The client pulled out all her daughter's old toys and they had a blast just playing Barbies.

I had my first measure for plantation shutters this weekend. I am so excited about starting to carry them. I really want to expand my product line. I am carrying Norman brand shutters. They are the best out there. I am running a summer special for 16.50 per square ft. That is an awesome price. Most places sell them for 18.00-22.00 per square foot. WCAA (Window Coverings Association of America). They had the business listed in Canton, OH instead of Canton, GA. No wonder I could never find it. Glad it's fixed now.

The above picture is from today's install.

Last Week of School

I always dread the last week of school. There are so many activities going on that I end up over scheduling myself. Ballet and baseball are over now, whew!!! I have 3 end of the year parties this week and then we are done with school. I really like it when the kids are home. It gets a little messy around the house but I like the relaxed schedule. The kids end up sleeping a little later and we just relax around here. I am taking a day or two off a week this summer to spend much needed time with the kids. There are a lot of things around Atlanta that we haven't done yet and I'm hoping to enjoy the time with them. Matthew is going into junior high this coming school year. It really makes you stop and think that time flies. It seems like yesterday, a foggy yesterday that he was born and we brought him home. Now junior high, tomorrow, high school. I'm going to enjoy it while I can.
I took some time off this weekend and have to go back to work tomorrow with 2 appointments, possibly 4. A busy day. I have 2 orders to finish up this week. I'm hoping to be able to squeeze some of my own stuff in this summer. I need to get all this finished up around my house.

Run, Run as fast as you can....

Today, I just went non-stop. I had to take cupcakes to Ben's class at lunch, then come back, do some work, go pick up Eva, bring her home. I then had to go to Norcross and pick up linings, then to a decorator's house to drop off pillows, then to one of her customer's house, then to another decorator's shop, then finally to my last appointment of the day at 6pm. I stopped by to try and get a belated birthday present for Ben but they were out as well. So, home I went.

We have been trying to get some orders knocked out this week. Lisa got a lot done while I was running today. I'm so glad she was here.

The appointment tonight was for arched panels.....yes, arched. I guess the last set was just practice. These will have an attached valance and the arch is a little more pronounced. It ought to be pretty interesting. The dining panels are going to look really pretty. We have done the tab top with cuffs before and they look really nice. I hope the fabric she picks out looks good.

The above picture was of the valance and panels we hung yesterday. It was around feet long and very heavy. It took two of us to get it up there. I thought it turned out really nice though.

Exciting Week's

It was really an exciting week here at Cherry Lane.

Lisa and I went to the International Window Coverings Expo on Thursday. I have to say that I was just a tad disappointed because it was smaller than in years past. Some of the vendors that I was looking for were not there, but some of my favorites were such as Award Fabrics. Mark was on hand making bloody mary's for everyone. (we took the bottled water). We opened accounts with LA Freds for a new line of fabrics and we also ordered and new line of trims. We are also carrying Norman plantation shutters now. Very exciting. Can't wait for my first order.

We visited the "Custom Home Furnishings Academy" booth and ooohhhed and aaaahhhed at all the samples that were hanging. We also went to the Dofix booth and found the most amazing iron. It was definitely something to save for and purchase next year. I renewed a lot of my subscriptions as well. I wasn't thinking and I wore new shoes to the show. The day ended when my feet screamed, "ENOUGH ALREADY".

We also got several orders finished last week and tried to keep as much to our schedule as possible. Keeping up with who, what, where and why is really working out for us. Lisa and I did work late on Thursday night to make up for being at the show.

The show got me to thinking and doing some self examining. I really want to take the business to the next level and I'm just trying to figure out what and where that is. I've been doing a lot of soul searching this weekend (in between company, ballet, baseball, etc).

The photos above are from the Expo. Hope you enjoy. It really was a good show.

On Schedule

I'm so surprised. Monday, we made a schedule of everything that needed to be done, everyday. We are sticking to it and it's working our pretty good. I have some paperwork to be done in the evenings but I'm not in the studio working every night. I could get used to this.

We got an order out today and then worked on some pillows and got some ordering done.

I had an appointment this afternoon to work on some panels and roman shades. I think it is going to turn out really nice.

I love doing window treatments. When you love what you do, it doesn't ever seem like work and you could find yourself "working" all the time before you realize what is happening. I have to be careful about that. I do love it, though.

The above picture is of the nursery for the first grandbaby of one of my favorite clients. I made the bedding and window treatments but they are so talented to decorate the nursery like they did. It is such a serene place to sit up nights feeding a sweet little baby. It's the kind of room you just want to go in and sit down and rest. Prayers and best wished go out to the Horne family on their pending arrival. They didn't find out if it was a girl or boy so double the excitement.

Today Was an Awesome Day!!!

Today was great. I got up this morning to find and email stating that I was chosen as one of the "Citizen Blogger" positions for the International Window Coverings Expo in Atlanta next week. It is a venue for vendors, designers, workrooms to come together and show off all the new products and technology for the industry. All the big names in the business will be there. Vendors come from as far away as China to market their new wares. It really is like "Disneyland" for the drapery professional. I'm really excited about the opportunity.

I hung the massive 2 arched panels today. They look great. The customer was so happy as was I. I had had nightmares about these panels. They really did complement the space.

I went on a new measure, guess what? Arched panels. Can you believe it? I guess today was just a practice run. Too funny.

I have an install tomorrow as well and those panels are in pieces on my work table. I will get them finished in the morning and delivered tomorrow afternoon. Then off to a measure tomorrow night.

I'm still working on the packet for the big house up in the mountains. I really want this to look good.

The picture above is from the install today. Hope you like it.

They Are Done

The massive 2 story, double width arched panels are done. They are in the workroom, in a bag and ready to go. I'm so happy. I just have to finish a shade and this order is ready to go out. Lisa and I worked all day on them and some of the weekend.

I have several of my decorators that have appointments tonight with potential clients. Saying a prayer for them to get the jobs.

This week is going to be crazy. The end of the school year is always busy for 1 student, multiply that by 4 and then add baseball, ballet, work and husband out of town and you have madness.

The above picture is of a house that was done by one of my decorators. We did the window treatments there. We are putting a portfolio together for a possible client.

Don't forget, this is the last week for the Atlanta Symphony Decorators Showhome. A great idea to take mom out for Mother's Day. Make a day out of touring the house and gardens and have lunch at the cafe. Check out all the details on the web http://www.decoratorsshowhouse.org/ . Don't forget, we made all the soft furnishings for the guest bedroom on the main floor.

Getting Some Rest Today

Even when I have to work on the weekends, I really enjoy a lazy Saturday morning and afternoon. I got caught up on my sleep and then went to my son's baseball game. They didn't win but he played really well.

I am still working on those 2 story panels. I have such a mental block. I usually look at everything as a challenge and I am really trying to with these. I have another busy week ahead with several installs going on. I am "redoing" my daughter's room so I can put both girls in the same room. Maybe I can squeeze getting their stuff done somewhere in here. I don't have a clue what I'm going to do yet.

May 14th is the annual Window Coverings Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center. I am scheduling quite a few classes for Lisa and myself and am looking forward to it. I am also saving my money to buy some new equipment. I just bought a new computerized Mitsubishi industrial machine and would really like to get either a "tacker" or an industrial blind hemmer. We will have to see.
The above picture is of a house we did in Alpharetta. I will post more pictures of it later.

Working for the Weekend

Wow, it has been really busy. When I'm down in the studio working like crazy, it is very difficult to keep up with the blog. I will try to do better. LOL. My husband looked at me last Friday and said, "Smile, it's Friday" to which I replied, "Does it count as Friday when you have to work the weekend?"

We have been working on a lot of things in the past week or so. We did a master bedroom treatment. Will try to get pictures when we can. We did a custom awning treatment for a Princess and The Frog themed playroom. I posted a picture of this one.

I also redesigned a dress for the Kentucky Derby for a client. She found the hat and fell in love but the dress lacked a little something, so I have been working on that. I got it delivered today and I really hope she loves it.

Brenda, from Fauxtastic Finishes and I installed the awning valance tonight. I hate installing. She did most of the work. I don't know why I have such a mental block. I don't mind helping at installations, I just hate being the one doing all of it. Let someone else get it up and I will do all the frou-frou.

Lisa and I are working on 4 double width 2 story arched panels right now. They are a ton of work. Making the pattern is a pain but I am determined to treat this as a challenge that I will conquer. LOL.

Playroom Heaven

This has been a really busy week. We have had 2 really big installs this week. The latest one was a playroom for a really lucky little girl. She loves fashion designers so the theme of the room was fashion. A stage was installed with lights underneath, a platform bed in which a twin mattress was turned into a sofa, complete with pillows. One wall was painted with dress forms and I went in and added three dimensional accents to them. The exterior of the room was painted to resemble the outside of a dress shop with shutters and an awning. It was too cute. She will get years of playtime out of it.

We got several new clients this week and have a really busy week in store next week too.

I am planning to tag along with my husband on his business trips this summer. He is going to New Orleans, Washington DC, and Las Vegas. I am going to have to work really hard to schedule things around these trips.

Tomorrow afternoon is the Vendor Party at the Atlanta Symphony Show Home. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping to make some really good business contacts.

9 Hour Install????

I time myself for ever thing. How much house cleaning can I do during commercials, can I unload and load the dishwasher during a commercial, how fast can I get a pillow made (my record is 21 minutes), how much work can I get done during a movie, etc. Today, I reached a new low. I went to an install and realized I was missing a bracket. I called Lisa (my assistant) and she found it so I raced back to get it. Being lunchtime, I stopped at one of those gas station/ fast food places to fill up and grab lunch. I actually timed myself to see if I could eat my lunch while 25.00 worth of gas pumped in my car. The bad thing is that I did it.

Today was crazy. I thought this install would last 3 hours, it lasted 9. I left there, went to pick up fabric and drove to drop off draperies and pick up cushions. I got back after 9pm. I don't seem to be able to get home before then when I am out. Eva was with me most of the day so we had fun together. We sang ABBA tunes in the car. She is so funny.

The above picture is of the master bedroom that we did today. There were a lot of other rooms and I will post those pics later.

Just Call Me Scarlett

I remember reading "Gone With the Wind" when I was in sixth grade. I read the whole book in less that a week and fell in love with Scarlett. I was very shy and insecure and the whole "take the bull by the horns" attitude intrigued me. Unfortunately, one of her characteristics that rubbed off was the whole "tomorrow is another day" mentality of dealing with things. Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow. That is soooo me!!! I am really trying to change that part of me but it is so difficult since it has been around for a while.

This weekend, I am paying the price. I have made 12 pillows (with zippers) 3 bedspreads, and put in 64 grommets (with the help of my loving husband). Several of the pillows are unusual sizes so I have to still make the down pillow forms for those. By making the forms, I'm talking cutting other down pillows up and stuffing the new ones. Zyrtex, here I come. That always makes me sneeze and cough. My eyes tear up, it's horrible. This install is in the morning and I have to get everything ready. I hope the customer likes it all. There is a lot to deliver. After this, I need a vacation!!! I won't take one though, too much going on.

Well, let me get to the feathers and get it over with. I will post pics when we get everything up. Actually, I may post pics of the mess with the feathers. We'll see......

The above picture is another condo in Florida that we made draperies for.

Hard Days Night

Boy, am I tired. The reason I haven't been posting is because I am working everynight. I have a really big order due Monday morning and have been trying to get it all done. We are all working like crazy. I had to go buy supplies today over in Norcross. Even though I only planned to be there a couple of hours, I spent all day making stops. The kids watched a movie in the back of the car while I went from place to place. My machine had a little freak out fit night before last so I had to go get a part for it. I had a freak out fit the rest of the night trying to figure out what I was going to do with my main machine not working and this order due.

It is spring break here and I want so bad to go on a mini vacation. I think I will plan one as soon as I get all this work done. That will be a little treat to myself. Speaking of vacations, the above picture is from a condo in Panama City, Florida that we did.

I will post pics of all the bedding and window treatments that we are working on when we get them installed. I did pick up a lot more fabric today so "Bring it on....."

My husbands new office is in dire need of a makeover so I may have to take some time and get that done for him. We will see.

Move out, Move in

Today, I had to take draperies down to Buckhead for the Atlanta Symphony Show Home. I fought morning Atlanta traffic then raced back to the workroom to finish the bedskirt then left here at 12:15 to move out of the Roswell Woman's Club House. I left there, came back to the workroom, unloaded everything then loaded the car with all the bedding for the Symphony Showhome and then raced back to Buckhead to deliver. I got stuck in 5:00 traffic for an hour and a half to get home, with all the kids in the car. They were really good though. I got home and my husband wanted to go out to dinner for our makeup anniversary that we missed.......needless to say, I don't feel like getting dressed or being romantic. I just want to put on pjs and chill out. Oh, well.

I hope everything goes good with the Atlanta Symphony Show. I really worked hard on everything. I can't wait to see it all done.

The above picture was a house in Naples, Florida that we did.

It's Over!!!

I hate to say this but I'm really glad that the Roswell Show Home is finally over. It was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed it but it has been a long month. I went to the after party tonight and it was a good time. They had a buffet spread that was really tasty. We sat with the builder and his family. They actually have a buyer for the house, they think. The next few days are crucial.

I am finishing up things for the Atlanta Symphony House tomorrow, I might work a little tonight but it's not looking good for that. My eyes are really heavy.

I've made some decisions regarding the business. I'm going to tighten up a little as far as hours go. I have a tendency to spread work out all over but I think I'm going to have set hours and not deviate from that. No more running all over. (Let's see how that works out)

Going to start the week fresh, feel creative and get things done.

The above picture is from a house in Naples, Florida that we did. We designed the cornice to look like a skateboard. We had not seen the room at all. It goes pretty well if I do say so myself.

Another Sunday Working

I am loving the new vehicle!!! I am not one of these people that is so wrapped up in status or what I am driving but I am in the car all day long most days so I want a car that is comfortable to be riding in, ie: air conditioning, wheel bearings, etc. I am so thankful to have a nice, reliable car to drive around in. Anyone want to take bets on how long I can keep it clean? I will give you a little hint, not long!!! I will try to change my ways, though. LOL.

I went to work at the show home today. Several of the items were selling which was encouraging. There was this really cute high school senior there who was a volunteer. We had a good time talking to her. I am totally out of business cards so I am having to improvise with some of the older cards. I hate that.

We had lunch at LaMadeline. I have eaten there more in the last month than ever in my whole life. It is right down the street from the show house so I am taking advantage of it.

I have a major busy week working on the items for the Atlanta Symphony Show House. I am really anxious about getting started but usually once I start cutting, I get into the groove.

Final Straw

I went by the local Ford dealership this morning before going to staff the show house. I looked at several models that I liked but still wasn't convinced that I was ready for a car note. I haven't had one in several years.

I had a good time at the house and met a lot of really nice people. Denise was there for a little while and I talked a little with some of the other designers that were there.

I decided to leave and meet my husband at the dealership so we could take a second look at the cars. I got on the shuttle, got to my car, backed out of the spot and heard the most awful sound. My tire was flat. I hate to say this but it looked as though it was punctured. I had to wait and hour for him to get there to change the tire and when he put the spare on, it was flat too!!!!! He had to take it off, take it to the gas station and air it up. Bring it back and put it back on. Crazy!! We left there and went to the dealership and traded the car in. I am now an SUV driver and not a van driver. I really like it though. I just hope that all my window treatments fit in it.

TGIF, Kind Of

It's Friday!! The only thing is that I have to work all weekend at the show home. This is really the last weekend I can work there because I have a class next weekend in Birmingham, AL.

I hope this weekend is pretty productive even if I am out of cards. I found some postcards with the business old name on them. I guess I could pass those out. I don't know, it seems a little tacky but what choice do I have?

We worked on several things today. We didn't get as far as I wanted but I will work a little this weekend on some things. The kids were out of school today so there were plenty of interruptions. They still are interrupting as I type.

It is the most beautiful day. Sunshine. I haven't seen that in a while. I know I should get some more work done and clean but............I think the kids could use the fresh air.

I have 2 retail appointments next week. Maybe the retail side of things is starting to pick up. The decorators I work with seem to be pretty steady. Hopefully the warmer weather is making people want to do some inside "fixing" up as well as outside.

Personal Triumph

Today was much better. I had a personal triumph today for which I am very happy and very relieved.

We worked on crib bedding all day today and I had to make a run for supplies. Fun, Fun. I have some panels to work on but am still waiting on measurements. Uggghmmmmm.....you know who you are. LOL.

Tomorrow we are working on items for the Atlanta Symphony Show Home in Buckhead. I have to have everything done by Friday of next week. This is a great opportunity for us so I'm really excited.

Denise worked at the Roswell Show Home today. It was realtor day and she said it was really busy. I'm out of cards, I'm totally out of cards and need to order more. One more thing I procrastinate on. I have to get that done tonight.

I just found out today that the kids are out of school tomorrow. Yeah, I know!!!

How do you handle someone in your field of business that is constantly disparaging you to others? Do you say something or do you ignore it and let that person reap what they sow? I'd appreciate comments. Sometimes you just don't know how to handle situations.

Today WILL Be Better

Yesterday was such a cruddy day. I don't know if all this dark, gloomy weather is getting to me or what! I am ready for some sunshine.

I got a check from a decorator yesterday. She had shorted me 20.00 on an install. She says that is what I quoted her but I can't imagine doing that. I missed my anniversary diner because of this install. The customer even asked me to carry this MASSIVE piece of art into her home from the garage. I had to go around the front of the house and "walk" it all the way up her front stairs. I did this to add that little bit of customer service for the decorator and I get shorted. I was so discouraged the rest of the day.

I had an install yesterday afternoon that took 4 hours. Most of the time, I was just sitting there watching the install. I even read a book to the customer's little girl while I waited. Actually, it was 2 books. She was really sweet so I didn't mind.

I have to use what installer the decorator chooses and sometimes it's weird when you don't really know them. I knew this guy because this decorator uses him all the time. It just really helps when you know them well because you know how they work and can help them more.

Plus, when you are sitting there forever, you can chit chat while you are working. lol.

Today I'm going to work on crib bedding and some panels and go back to being encourage.
The above picture is one that Kami from KHeaton Photography took from the show home.

What a Headache

I have had the worst headache all day. Good thing nothing required a lot of thinking today.

I bought an iron. Not the really expensive one but this one was pretty pricey. We needed it today with ironing those linen panels. Linen that was in a bag for about 2 years. It took several hours.

We started on some crib bedding today. The fabrics are so cute. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I love making crib bedding. The prices for custom really aren't that bad. You would spend more going to Babies are us and getting one of their sets. (Unless you get expensive fabrics). Then, you get to pick what you want and no one else would have it. I like it when parents choose fabrics that are their style and not just "girl" or "boy". You can take sophisticated fabrics and accessorize them to go in an infants room. That way, things can grow with the child instead of having to change everything every couple of years. Changing things, though, can be fun too!!!

Never Again, again.

Everytime someone asks me to alter draperies that someone else did, I always say "I will never do this again!" I always end up doing it again. Of course, this time it was linen and linen stretches so bad. We took all the hems out and nothing was even at the bottom. It took forever to get the hems straight and to the length we needed. AAAAHHHHH!!! It drove me crazy.

I got a lot of yardage and hardware figured today from last week.

Family stuff sprung up in the middle of the day and got me distorted but I quickly snapped out of it. After spending several hours on that, I felt like someone cracked me over the head with a baseball bat. I still have that headache. It could have been from the fact that I started back on Atkin's diet today and am in carb withdrawal.

I have been working really hard to get my Facebook page for the business up and running. I have been trying to keep up with posts and pictures so that customers can link there from the website. I think I finally have it where I want it. Now all I have to do is stay on top of things. That shouldn't be too hard since I am on the computer all the time.

I got an email from a lady I met at the show home yesterday saying how much she enjoyed our stuff and what a great show home it is. I thought that was so nice. Feedback like that really makes my day.

Someone left the monitor on down here and I can hear what the boys are saying upstairs. Let's just say, I'd better go check on things.

P.S. The above picture is from the great room of the show home. We did these draperies for Park Place Interiors.

Today was Lisa's turn

Today Lisa, my assistant worked with me at the show home. This was her first time working there. She really enjoyed going around the rooms and looking at everyone's designs.

We had the opportunity to meet several new decorators. I always like putting faces with names I have heard.

Today wasn't as busy as yesterday, or it didn't seem to be. I was prepared though. I had a burger and fries and some cans of soda in my bag and stuck them in the closet. I would go in and take a couple of bites when no one was looking. I did get caught once. I had the whole package of fries in my hand and turned around and there was this couple staring at me. I felt like a 10 year old getting caught. Oh well, it's my stuff. If I want to eat on it, I can. At least that's what I tell my kids.

Have some ideas for future business that I can't wait to set in motion. I just need to clear my thoughts and put them down on paper.

We have a busy week ahead. Actually have several busy weeks but that is good. I'm not complaining. I just need a plan of action.

Great Day!!!

Kami came to the showhome to take photos today and ended up staying the whole day with me. We really had a good time. We met some nice people and made some great contacts. One of my friends, Kerri came by and we gave her the grand tour and she ended up staying with us as well.
I was so excited by all the positive comments we got about our rooms. Everyone really seemed to like everything. It really is invigorating to hear. I am so thankful that I get to do what I love to do.
I was able to talk to some of the other decorators and do a little marketing. I was so hungry but we were waiting on Kerri to get there. When she did, we got ready to go eat lunch and found that the cafe had just closed!!!! Of course, since I was coughing up dust I was so hungry. We got some snacks from the hospitality table and I talked the girl who was closing up the cafe to let me have the display diet coke. It was room temperature but I didn't care. I was in withdrawal. I made that little snack last until Kerri and I could go to LaMadeline's and eat after the show. AAAAHHHHHH!!! I love that place.
I will post some of the pictures that Kami took as soon as she emails them to me.
The above photo is from one of my most favorite clients. She has just listed her daughter's condo, where this photo was taken. Check out my Facebook page for information on sale if you are interested.

Made Really Good Time

I actually made good time today around Atlanta. Started the day in Dunwoody, then 2 stops in Alpharetta. Made my way over to Norcross then up through Marietta and to Roswell. I got back to the workroom around 1:30. For those of you who know Atlanta, that is a Nascar qualifying time. Got a lot of measuring done and picked up lots of fabric. I have my work "cut out" for me. (Ha-ha, get it). JK

I'm considering a new iron. A Rowenta. I used one a couple of weeks ago that belonged to another workroom and loved it. I have some linen panels to install next week and I could sure use a heavy duty iron. $140.00 for an iron. I don't know. This one was awesome though.

I am planning on working at the show home most of the weekend and doing paperwork tonight. My husband and I will put the kids to bed and go down to the workroom, he with his computer and my with mine. We will eat dessert and drink coffee and each tap away on our laptops. We will put a movie in the dvd player, that way we can say that we are at least "watching a movie together". LOL.

AAAAAHHHHHH, the life.

Day Started Great..........That should have been a clue.

Yes, this day started pretty good. I stopped by at the local walmart to pick up a few things. I was standing in the checkout line flipping through magazines. I got to "Atlanta" magazine and BAM!!! There I was. There was a photo and nice little write up about the business. I screamed out and grabbed every copy they had in line. People must have thought I was crazy. I didn't care. I was so excited. It was just a little write up but I will take anything I can get.

We changed the hem in some panels we were working on and messed around a little in the workroom.

I got a call from a guy who wants me to advertise in his magazine. The thing is, that I have advertised there before with NO response whatsoever!!!! With these mailout magazines, you have to wonder, do they get mailed at all? How could you possibly check that kind of thing?

Then came the parenting issues.....Need I say more. That took up the rest
of my day.

I am doing some research on hardware and grommets at the moment. Hopefully I can find what I'm looking for.
The above photo is a chair that I designed and had made by Chris for the show home. It is grey silk and velvet print flowers on it. There are about 500 nailheads on this chair.

Weird Day

Well, It has been raining which means my basement is flooding again. Great. Had to deal with that first thing this morning. The "n" key on my laptop only works if you beat it. This laptop has been a pain since I got it.

We finished some panels today. Got to the install and the customers idea of bottom of trim was not mine or the itstallers idea of bottom of the trim, so I had to bring them back to change the length. (BTW, the customer had several layers of trim). No biggie, I will repleat in the morning and get them back to her tomorrow afternoon.

I also found out that all the bedding and draperies for the Buckhead Symphony showhome are due by the 30th. I was like great, the 30th of April, no, the 30th of March!!!!!.

I just got home at 8:30 this evening from a meeting with a decorator. I'm really excited because it seems like she is going to let me do some really cool things. I can't wait.

We had to do some mitered corners today, we were drawing a blank so we broke out a training video. That's pretty tired. LOL.

Some days can be really hard but I really do love my job.

Pillows and Paperwork

Today we cut out pillows, or should I say that Lisa cut out pillows. I finished up a lot of paperwork and sent out email and did some ordering.

We are having the basement worked on so there was a lot of really loud noise going on. I feel like we got enough accomplished though.

I have several orders to get out this week with a really big order due next week. Enough to keep us busy, which is really good.

The photo above is of the large swag order that we did several weeks ago. Hope you like it.

It is DONE

The Roswell Women's Club show home is finally done. It opened thursday morning to really good reviews.

Everything turned out great. I had such amazing help with Chris at Town and Country and Denise from Decor Infusion. Also Mark at Award Fabrics. Everyone came together to make it fabulous.

We did have a little drama though. I was running so late that the decorator in the next room was having a fit thinking that I wasn't getting everything done. There was a little back and forth but in the end, we came through. I have never had anything ready early I don't think but I always get it done.

Right in the middle of having to get the house done, I had a huge order that needed to be installed. Lisa and I stayed up until 2:30am to get it done. I got back up at 6am to get ready and load the car. I would say that I was ready for the weekend but I worked the whole time. I need another vacay. I will be at the show home working all weekend through the end of the month. I have enjoyed the people I have met and the contacts I have made. Things really seem to be going well by the grace of God. I had to laugh because everything that could go wrong, did. We were up against all kinds of pressure and I was having my doubts for while. I said that if I got any positive response, it would have to be heaven sent. Right after that, we had several people tell us that ours was their favorite room. LOL.

If you can, please visit our rooms as well as the great room done by Park Place Interiors. I did the window treatments and some of the pillows in there as well. You can get information at

TGIF

This has undeniably been the longest week ever. Everything, including the show home was due this week. I have been living off of 4 hours of sleep a night and am about to drop.

I got everything moved in to the show home (at the last minute of course). The ladies there were calling thinking that I wasn't going to show up. I still have a few things to get done before the opening next week buy most of it is done. I had to call in every favor I had and then some. I have the most incredible friends who are willing to help me out in a pinch.

I got the first part of the whole house that I am doing done. We installed this morning. I posted the pics. Lisa and I were up all night finishing up. We were both so tired. I was awful!!!! The job got done though and the customer and decorator were very happy.

I really owe Lisa and Teresa lunch for sure. Another of my friends came over and helped me sew rings on a roman shade this week. We worked until about 1am. I paid her with sushi, she bought the Starbucks.

I need a nap so I am going to curl up with Sarah for the afternoon.

Day late and a dollar short

I spent all day shopping for the show home. I have to move in this week due to the opening party being next friday night. I picked out fabric for the sewing room window treatment but have no idea what I'm going to make.

I went to get the coffee table and round dining table and they were out of the coffee table so I had to pick another one. Of course it was more expensive. Then I went to get the rug and bookcase and they were out of both and had no idea when they were coming in. I am down to the wire here and the budget is blown and I have to start from scratch on several pieces. This is going to be interesting.

I went downtown to get the fabric for the sofa, chairs and draperies because I was told they were going to be in on thursday morning......NO, they were not. I have to go back monday. Chris, the upholsterer was not happy. I wasn't happy either. Total wasted day so I decided to take the kids to a movie to chill out. I went to 5 theaters and missed the movie we wanted to see by 30 minutes or so. We then decided to go skating but when we got there were told they were closing in 10 minutes. Is there a theme here? That has been my week. Glad to start over on monday. Wish me luck.
